Dry cleaning was discovered by accident in 1825. Parisian Jean-Baptiste Jolly knocked over a lamp, spilling spirits of turpentine onto the tablecloth. He noticed that where the oil had evaporated the cloth was cleaner, and dry cleaning was born. Dry cleaning was subsequently introduced into the UK in 1857, and although the process has changed significantly the principle remains the same.
